Introduction to the Universal Therapeutic Apology
The Universal Apology is a therapeutic apology that can be delivered by nearly any parent or caregiver in North America. Until recently, parents were not taught to tend to their children’s emotions. Rather, they were encouraged to reassure, avoid, show the bright side or focus on problem-solving, increasing the risk of difficulties in their child’s development of emotion processing, and leaving many parent-child relationships vulnerable to ruptures of varying severity. This clinical training resource will offer theory and a clear script (with options) to support clinicians to support parents or caregivers in the development and delivery of a “universal therapeutic apology” related to the emotional culture of the system and its impact. This apology was developed to heal ruptures, strengthen relationships, and decrease self-stigma in an adolescent or adult child relating to difficulties with emotion processing and/or related mental health issues.
